PERLIS INDERA KAYANGAN

BY HJ ZULHEIMY MAAMOR
4.3.2024 : 8.22 AM

After finishing the program at MSU College Sungai Petani at around 2pm, we continued our journey to Kangar, Perlis. The 128 km journey took approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes.

Perlis is the smallest state in Malaysia, with an area of 795 sq. km, but it has a wealth of natural, cultural, and historical treasures that rival those in the larger states. Lying at the northwestern tip of the Malaysian Peninsula and bordered by Thailand, Perlis is naturally green and verdant.

Kangar is the state capital, while Kuala Perlis is an important ferry terminal for those heading to Pulau Langkawi. Padang Besar is one of the major entry points for visitors from Thailand traveling by road or rail into Peninsular Malaysia.

MY MEMORIES IN THE STATE OF PERLIS

KOLEJ KOMUNITI ARAU
JALAN TENGKU BUDRIAH
TAMBUN TUALANG
ARAU, PERLIS
16 FEBRUARY 2017

Arau is the royal town of Perlis, the town is the disembarkation point for visitors from Kuala Lumpur to Pulau Langkawi by train.

On 16 February 2017, we held an Health Screening program at Arau Community College located at Jalan Tengku Budriah, Tambun Tulang, Arau, Perlis. The program ran from 9 am to 2 pm. A total of 96 students and staff attended the health screening on that day.

The college was established on 12 June 2001 by running 2 full-time courses, namely the Certificate in Architectural Draftsmanship and the Certificate in Electrical Technology (Installation and Service).
At the beginning of its establishment, KKAP operated at Arau Technical Secondary School, Perlis, while waiting for the completion of a permanent building in Tambun Tulang, Perlis. In November 2005, KKAP moved to a permanent building at Jalan BN (now Jalan Tengku Budriah).
At that time, KKAP ran three more full-time courses, namely the Certificate in Computer and Support, the Certificate in Fashion and Apparel, and the Certificate in Food Quality Control Processing.
Apart from full-time courses, KKAP also offers short courses under the Jabatan Pembelajaran Sepanjang Hayat (PSH).  Short courses are provided for the benefit of the community to improve skills (upskilling), retrain human resources (reskilling), increase knowledge, add value to products/services, and others. KKAP is a lifelong learning hub established to fulfill the government's aspiration to facilitate community access to education.

FEDERAL HOTEL
KG TOK PEDUKA
KANGAR, PERLIS
While in Perlis we stayed at Kangar Federal Hotel located in Kampung Tok Peduka, Kangar, Perlis. Federal Hotel Kangar Perlis is located about 15 km from Taman Anggur Perlis. It houses a restaurant and offers Wi-Fi access and parking lot.

My colleagues > together we had traveled to every state in Malaysia

I feel excited while in Kangar is to be able to meet again with my old friend from intake 139/80 (RMN) that is Musib Senawi who lives in Utan Aji, Perlis. We both serve in the Royal Malaysian Navy.

PADANG BESAR
The border town of Padang Besar, situated on the border of Songkhla Province, Thailand, is 36 km from Kangar. It is where Malaysians and Thais travel through for shopping, business, or recreational trips, it has been a popular shopping paradise since 1960.
The town opposite Padang Besar in Thailand is also known as Padang Besar. Being a duty-free haven, Padang Besar also has miscellaneous shops and an open-air flea market that sells an assortment of clothes, fabrics, homewares, and other products.

Plade of interest that can be reached within 20 minutes from Padang Besar is Gua Kelam, Chuping (the largest Sugar Cane land) and Timah Tasoh Lake.

Padang Besar is about 33.4 km from our Hotel, around 36 minutes drive.

A border checkpoint is located at the Padang Besar Immigration, Customs, Quarantine, and Security (ICQS) Complex.

This is the vehicle we use to travel around the country

BUKIT KETERI
A well-known limestone formation, Bukit Keteri, is located 10 km from Kangar, Perlis. This hill is very popular for rock climbing activities. The climbing route was discovered through the Mammut Expedition in 2007. The hill is 131 meters high, and the level of difficulty for rock climbing activities on this hill is considered the most difficult in Asia, according to Perlis climbers.

WANG KELIAN
Wang Kelian is about 40 km from Kangar and 21.1 km from Padang Besar. The village has rows of stalls that offer a variety of goods, including clothing, kitchenwares, gifts, and, of course, food. It was a popular with tourists as it was the location of a border market.

** Note: Wang Kelian Market was closed during our visit to Perlis on 2017

In March 2015, mass graves of people believed to be Rohingyas who were victims of human trafficking were discovered in the jungles north of Wang Kelian in the area called Wang Burma. Reports stated that as many as 139 graves and 29 illegal detention camps were discovered during operations carried out by the Malaysian Police.

Others Attraction of Wang Kelian:

KUALA PERLIS
Kuala Perlis is famous as the gateway to Langkawi Island via the sea route, apart from Kuala Kedah. The most famous dish in Kuala Perlis is Laksa Kuala Perlis, as well as Ikan Bakar.

MASJID ALWI
A major landmark in Kangar is the golden-domed mosque on Jalan Besar. Built in 1910, its design is typical of that era.

HARUM MANIS MANGO
The state fruit of Perlis is the local variety of the aromatic and succulent fruit that is commonly enjoyed on its own or with sticky rice. There is a 1,000-acre Harum Manis Mango Plantation in Sungai Batu Pahat, Perlis.

GETTING THERE AND AROUND
There is no airport in Perlis; however, the North-South Expressway provides easy access from the rest of Malaysia and Thailand. Both the Malaysian and Thai rail companies serve the two Perlis stations at Arau and Padang Besar.

When I set foot in Perlis, it means I have completely explored every corner of my homeland Malaysia. Perlis is one state that I have never been to before.

WELCOME TO PERLIS !!
