2001 - 2005: THE INSTITUTION OF ENGINEERS, MALAYSIA

Long-lasting memories of working with the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia, from 2001 to 2005.

GENTING VIEW RESORT
GENTING HIGHLAND, PAHANG
18 FEBRUARY 2001
On 18 February 2001 I attended a meeting at Genting View Resort located in Genting Highland, Pahang.

The journey from Kuala Lumpur to Genting View Resort is 43 minutes and the travel distance is 40.9 km.

Genting Highland is a hill station located on the peak of Mount Ulu Kali in the Titiwangsa Mountains, central Peninsular Malaysia. 
Genting Highland was established in 1965 by the late Malaysian businessman Lim Goh Tong. 


Surrounded by lush green rainforest, Genting View Resort is strategically placed on the midland of Genting Highlands. 
Located above at a 900m altitude high on the West Malaysia's Main Range, the resort offers a lovely cool mountain breeze with fresh air in abundance featuring a tranquil environment for  serene stay. 








The swimming pool area and a children's playground with a tree-house slide, set against the backdrop of the hilly, forested landscape and the resort buildings.

IEM 42ND ANNUAL DINNER
MANDARIN ORIENTAL HOTEL

The 42nd Annual Dinner of The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia was held at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Kuala Lumpur City Centre on 12 April 2001.
The Guest of Honour present at this Dinner was Dato' Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, then Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia.



The multi-award winning Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur lies adjacent to the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, within easy reach of all that the city has to offer. Opened in October 1998, is a prestigious 5-star hotel that offers a luxury amenities including a refreshing pool with stunning views, steam room, and complimentary wireless internet access in the comfortable, air-conditioned rooms.

43rd IEM Annual Dinner
Istana Hotel

The 43rd Annual Dinner of The Institution of Engineers Malaysia was held at the Istana Hotel on Jalan Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur.




The Istana Hotel situated in the city's pretigious Golden Triangle, began operation in 1992. It featured 500 rooms, located at 73, Jalan Raja Chulan, close to key city landmarks like the KL Tower and a few minutes from major shopping malls.

Unfortunately, the Istana Hotel ceased operations permanently on 1 September 2021, after 30 years in business.It was one of the hotels that closed due to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was later acquired by Tradewinds Corporation Berhad and is currently being transformed Waldorf Astoria in Malaysia open aroung 2024.

AWANA GOLF & COUNTRY RESORT

Awana Golf & Country Resort is a hotel in BentongPahang. Awana Golf & Country Resort is situated within Gohtong Jaya, nearby to the shopping centre Genting Highlands Premium Outlets, as well as near the bus station Awana Sky Central.





The Awana Golf and Country Resort is now known as Resort World Awana and has evolve into a nature-inspired resort destination within the Genting Highlands complex. It is currently rated 4 out of 5 stars. 




ISO Training course organized by The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM), held at the Awana Golf & Country Resort (now Resorts World Awana) from May 25-27, 2002.
The training was most likely focused on the then-current version of the ISO 9000 series of standards, particularly ISO 9001, which deals with Quality Management Systems (QMS).
ISO standards are a set of international criteria for quality, safety, efficiency, and other management systems, and training is essential for implementation and certification. 

45th IEM Annual Dinner
Palace of The Golden Horses

The 45th Annual Dinner of The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia was held at the Palace of The Golden Horses in Seri Kembangan, Selangor on 17 April 2004.
The Guest of Honour present at this Dinner was Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, then Prime Minister of Malaysia.



The Hotel was tagged as "Asia's Most Extraordinary Hotel", is a world-class, award-winning, luxury hotel located within the iconic MINES Wellness City, a 15 minutes away from the heart of Kuala Lumpur city and 35 minutes from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). 
The hotel offers unrivalled conference space with a total of 15 meeting rooms, a theatrette and two ballrooms.

46th IEM Annual Dinner
Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre
Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya
Selangor

The 46th Annual Dinner of The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia was held at the Sunway Pyramid Convention in Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya, Selangor on 16 April 2005.
The dinner was graced with presence of the Guest of Honour, the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Y.B. Dato'Sri Ir. Dr. Jamaluddin bin Dato' Jarjis. 


The distinctive architecture of the Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall complex, including the large Lion Head entrance and the adjacent hotel tower. 

Sunway Lagoon Theme Park, specifically the large surf beach pool and surrounding structures. 

Since it first opened its door in 1997, Sunway Pyramid, Malaysia's first themed shopping and entertainment mall has undergone a magnificent transformation to herald a new shopping kingdom. 
The Sunway Convention Centre is now known as the Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre. It remains a key venue for convention, exhibitions and major events in the Sunway Complex in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. 




Y.B. Dato'Sri Ir. Dr. ZJamaluddin bin Dato' Jarjis elevated the proceedings with an impassioned speech regarding the industrialisation of the nation and the key roles that engineers played in that endeavour.

I worked with the Institution of Engineers Malaysia at the IEM Building located in Petaling Jaya from 1999 - 2011. I work as the IEM Secretariat responsible for conducting courses, seminars, conferences, and so on for IEM members. I have also been responsible for coordinating three technical divisions in IEM, namely The Mechanical Engineering Technical Division, Building Services Technical Division and Mineral Engineering Technical Division. 
The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) is a professional learned society established in 1959. It is one of the largest professional organisations in the country, serving engineering across all disciplines.

The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia has conducted a Brainstorming Session at the Mahkota Century Hotel in Melaka in March 2000.
A Brainstorming is a method of generating ideas and sharing knowledge to solve a particular commercial or technical problem, in which participants are encouraged to think without interruption. Each participants shares their ideas as soon as they come to mind. 


It was a prominent resort-style hotel and apartment complex in the city center, known for its extensive facilities. The hotel was a major attraction in Melaka,offered a variety of amenities including Extensive Pool Areas, Family Leisure Facilities, with location on the waterfront, right next to Mahkota Parade, which was a major shopping and entertainment complex.







STAFF APPRECIATION LUNCH
PJ HILTON HOTEL

A lunch for IEM staff was held at the PJ Hilton Hotel to appreciate the success of an event that had been implemented.

The hotel near PJ New Town, within 2 km of Petaling Jaya Museum, Taman Jaya Park and Amcorp Mall. 

In Malaysia, the Hiltons runs 11 hotels, however, Hilton Petaling Jaya (PJ Hilton) has remained an old but gold persona, having roots back to when it was formerly known as the Jaya Puri Hotel.

IEM Jog A Round
Taman Tasik Titiwangsa]

A jogging event was held for IEM members at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa on 26 March 2000. Running or jogging is one of the best cardio exercises you can do. Running at least 10 minutes a day can significantly lower your risk of cardiovascular disease. Runners lower their chances of dying from heart disease by half. 

Taman Tasik Titiwangsa is one of Kuala Lumpur's most iconic and well-loved urban parks, serving as a "green lung" for the city. Located North east fringe of Kuala Lumpur city center. It was declared opened on February 1,1980.
Titiwangsa is the name of the main mountain range (Banjaran Titiwangsa) that forms the backbone of Peninsular Malaysia, and the name was chosen to reflect the greenery and natural scenery.





IEM 41ST ANNUAL DINNER

The IEM annual dinner is held in April every year. In year 2000, the Annual Dinner was held at the Renaissance Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. The guests were IEM members from all over the country. Indeed, every year, IEM members would gather for an annual dinner to strengthen ties between members.

GEOSYNTHETIC ASIA 2000 CONFERENCE (GA 2000)
PALACE OF THE GOLDEN HORSES

Geosynthetic Asia 2000 Conference was held at The Palace of The Golden Horses Hotel at Seri Kembangan, Selangor to explores the appropriate use and beneficial impact of geosynthetics on civil infrastructure and sustainability through Asia. 
The conference was part of the series of Asian Regional Conferences on Geosynthetics. One of the papers presented at the event was titled "Failure of A Reinforced Soil Wall on Piles" by Gue, S. S. & Chen, C. S., confirming the event's occurrence and the involvement of local geotechnical engineers.



The Palace of the Golden Horses is a majestic 5-star hotel often referred to as "Asia's Most Extraordinary Hotel."
The hotel is located in Mines Wellness City in Seri Kembangan, Selangor, about 15 minutes south of the Kuala Lumpur City Center.
The hotel is situated on a 150-acre man-made lake, which was formerly the site of the Hong Fatt Mine, once the largest opencast tin mine in the world. The area was transformed into Mines Resort City (now Mines Wellness City) for tourism and recreation.










This used to be the Mint Hotel, I stayed at the Mint Hotel in year 2000, located along the KL-Seremban Highway, close to the Mines Exhibition Centre and the Selangor Turf Club race course. 
The hotel ceased operations in February 2005 due to financial difficulties and a defaulted loan. It was later auctioned and acquired by property tycoon Tan Sri Lee Kim Yew. The hotel underwent a major refurbishment and rebranding programme and is now known as the Nouvelle Hotel.


I checked in Google Maps that Hotel Mint has already closed its operations, not sure what year.
