Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square) located in Kuala Lumpur in front of Sultan Abdul Samad Building. Formerly known as the Selangor Club Padang. It was here that the Union Jack was lowered and the Malaysian flag hoisted for the first time at midnight on 31 August 1957.
Since then, the Independence Square has been the usual venue for the annual Independence Day Parade.

Great Eastern's Colour My Heart Run 2015, which aims to promote a healthy lifestyle, was held in Kuala Lumpur and Penang.
Held in collaboration with the Heart Foundation, the run in George Town, Penang will be on April 19 and the run in Kuala Lumpur on May 24.
On May 24, 2015, the Great Eastern Colour My Heart Run transformed Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur, into a vibrant explosion of color. This event was a major milestone for Great Eastern Life, as it was the inaugural year they combined their popular "Live Great Run" with a high-energy color theme in collaboration with the Heart Foundation of Malaysia (YJM).
The 12km timed race and a 5km fun walk catering to all ages and fitness levels will also be a colourful run since those participating will be showered with coloured powder during the run.
The run attracted over 16,500 participants (across the Penang and KL legs combined), with the Kuala Lumpur event serving as the grand finale. It was designed to promote cardiovascular health through "experiential" fitness—making exercise so fun that it didn't feel like a chore.
Great Eastern Life director and chief executive officer, Datuk Koh Yaw Hui in a statement said the Penang leg would start from Padang Kota Lama in George Town and the Kuala Lumpur leg from Merdeka Square.
The 2015 series successfully raised RM82,475 for the Heart Foundation of Malaysia. A portion of every registration fee (RM5) was donated directly to support heart disease patients and public awareness programs.
Sultan Abdul Samad Building located along Jalan Raja, Kuala Lumpur was originally designed by A.C Norman dan his assistant R.A. Bidwell, with some contributions from A.B Hubback who also designed the fixtures of the Building.
The Construction began in September 1894 and was completed in 1897. The foundation stone was laid on 6 October 1894 by the Governor of ths Straits Settlements, Sir Charles Mitchell.
The building was renamed Sultan Abdul Samad in 1974 in honor of the Sultan of Selangor at the time when construction began.

Bubble Heart Run Kuala Lumpur is a continuation of the Bubble Heart Run held in Bayan Lepas, Penang on 25 September 2016. On October 23, 2016, Kuala Lumpur hosted the Great Eastern Bubble Dash Run, a massive event that transformed Dataran Merdeka into a foam-filled celebration of fitness and charity.The run was a collaboration between the Heart Foundation of Malaysia (YJM) and Great Eastern Life. It was designed to promote a healthy lifestyle in a fun, accessible way. The 2016 KL edition was particularly significant as it attracted approximately 15,000 participants.
The event successfully raised over RM152,220 for the Heart Foundation of Malaysia. Additionally, Great Eastern Life ChildrenCare sponsored 500 pairs of sports shoes for underprivileged children to encourage them to stay active.
