MELAKA THE HISTORICAL CITY

Lying in the southern part of Peninsular Malaysia between the states of Johor and Negeri Sembilan, Melaka was an important trading post in the country's early history, attracting traders from around the region and even the rest of the world.

Melaka is 149 km from Kuala Lumpur and 216 km from Johor Bahru, easily accessible by highway from these cities.

Founded by a prince called Parameswara, Melaka rose to become a powerful port due to its strategic location on the Straits of Malacca at the center of the early trading route between east and west.

Melaka was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.

Memories of places I have visited at Melaka:

  2. Take a walk Down Memory Lane : Ayer Keroh, Melaka

HANG TUAH WELL

Hang Tuah was a legendary Malay warrior during the early days of the Melaka Sultanate. Kampung Duyong is believed to be the village of Hang Tuah. The village is right beside the Hang Tuah Well, about 8 km from the city center.
I was on a site visit to Melaka with trainees from the Pusat Latihan Ternakan Ayam, Ayer Keroh, Melaka on 26 September 1994. It was like a step back into the heart of Malay folklore.
In 1994, Kg.Duyong was a traditional, quite Malay village. There were no large-scale museum complexes of paved parking lots for tour buses. Visitors typically reached the well by driving through narrow village roads line with wooden houses on stilts and fruit trees.
Many visitors in 1990's came specifically to collect the water in bottles. It was widely believed those day to have healing properties or the power to bring good luck.

HANG LI PO WELL
Legend has it that the Chinese Emperor sent his daughter, Princess Hang Li Po, to marry Sultan Mansur Shah. The well (also known as Perigi Raja or King's well) was said to have been built by the Princess's followers in 1459 as the main source of water supply.
In retaliation against the Portuguese, the Sultan ordered the well to be poisoned, and many died as a result.
The local belief is that the well has never dried up, even during times of drought. The local lore suggests that if you toss a coin into the well, you are destines to return to Melaka one day.
The well is located at the foot of Bukit Cina, next to the Sam Po Kong Temple, just 1 km from the city center.

TUN TEJA MAUSOLEUM
MERLIMAU, JASIN, MELAKA
It is the burial place of Tun Teja Ratna Bengala, consort of Sultan Mahmud Shah, who ruled Melaka from 1458 until 1511 (the last Sultan of Melaka).Located in Merlimau, about 24 km from Melaka city.
Back in 1994, during my visit, to get there you would have to drive through the lush greenery of paddy fields. The tomb is tucked away from the main Muar-Melaka road.

Who was Tun Teja?
Tun Teja Ratna Benggala was the daughter of the Bendahara (Prime Minister) of Pahang. She was legendary for her extraordinary beauty and grace. Her story is one of the most famous romantic tragedies in Malay history:
  • The Abduction: According to the Hikayat Hang Tuah, the Sultan of Melaka (Sultan Mahmud Shah) was obsessed with her beauty. He sent Hang Tuah to bring her to Melaka.
  • The Betrayal: Using a "love potion" (or sheer charm), Hang Tuah convinced her to flee with him. It was only when they reached Melaka that she realized she was not to marry her rescuer (Hang Tuah), but the Sultan.
  • The Death: In 1511, when the Portuguese attacked Melaka, the royal family fled toward Muar. Tun Teja, who was already frail and ill, could not survive the arduous journey. She passed away in Merlimau and was buried there on the spot, while the Sultan continued his retreat.
Visiting Tun Teja’s tomb in the 90s was a reminder of the "human cost" of the fall of the Melaka Sultanate. While the wells represent the power and growth of the empire, her mausoleum represents its end—a queen buried in the mud and paddy fields of a village while her kingdom crumbled behind her.
