6 JUNE 2024

I had the opportunity to visit Sabah for the third time in 2013, while working with The Heart Foundation of Malaysia at Jalan Semarak Kuala Lumpur.
My colleagues and I were involved in the 2013 Sabah Heart Week program which took place at Suria Sabah Shopping Complex in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

KOTA KINABALU
Kota Kinabalu, previously known as Jesselton is the capital of Sabah state in the northern part of the Island of Borneo.Often referred to as KK, its a coastal city partly surrounded by rainforest. It is a gateway to Kinabalu Park, the home of 4,095m high Mount Kinabalu.
When North Borneo (the old name of Sabah) united with Sarawak, Singapore and the Federation of Malaya to form the Federation of Malaysia in 1963, the state changed its name and became known as Sabah, with Jesselton remaining the main center of government.
Jesselton was renamed Kota Kinabalu on 30 September 1968 and received city status from the Malaysian government on 2 February 2000.

Jalan Tun Fuad Stephen was named after Muhammad Fuad Stephen @ Donald Aloysius Marmaduke Stephens (1920-1976), the first and the fifth Chief Minister of Sabah, from 1963-64 and again from 1975 to his death in 6 June 1976.He died in a controversial air crash on 6 June 1976 knowns as Double Six Crash at Kota Kinabalu that killed all 11 onboard.

Kota Kinabalu Heart Week 2013 was held at Suria Sabah Shopping Mall, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah from 17 to 22 August 2013. This Heart Week campaign is the result of a collaboration between the Malaysian Heart Foundation, Kuala Lumpur, the Sabah Heart Patient Fund Association, the Kota Kinabalu Health Office and Makamewah Sdn Bhd (Sabah Solar Complex Management). Also helping throughout this campaign are nurses from Queen Elizabeth I and II Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

Suria Sabah Shopping Mall was opened to the public on December 3, 2009. Located in the middle of the city center and business center of Kota Kinabalu opposite the Wisma Sabah building.
While in Kota Kinabalu, we stayed at the Best Western Kinabalu Daya Hotel on Jalan Pantai. The distance to Suria Sabah Shopping Mall is only 350 meters and we walk every day from the hotel to Suria Sabah.

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah is the main for the city and the whole of Sabah. It is named after Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.
The first hospital building was built in 1957 (firstly in the Karamunsing neighbourhood of the city) along the Old Tuaran Road. The second building was built in 1981.
