This palace was used by the Emperor of China for almost 500 years until Emperor Puyi of the Qing Dynasty was overthrown in 1911. Built on the orders of Emperor Zhu Di (the 2nd Emperor of the Ming Dynasty) in the years 1406 to 1420, it contains 980 buildings and 8,707 rooms. The city was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987.

Niu Jie Mosque is the oldest mosque in Beijing, built in 996 AD during the Liao Dynasty. Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty later restored and enlarged this mosque.
In 1215, the Mongol army under Genghis Khan destroyed the mosque, but it was rebuilt in 1443 during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).

Near this square is also the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong (Founder of the People's Republic of China in 1949). This mausoleum was completed in 1977.
It was here on April 15, 1989, that a series of demonstrations led by students, intellectuals, and labor activists took place in the People's Republic of China. The death toll from the riots is between 2,000 and 3,000 people according to figures from the Chinese Students Association and the International Red Cross.

PANDA HOUSE
Located within the Beijing Zoo, the Panda House is an attraction in Beijing. Panda is a unique animal species in China. It likes to live in bamboo groves. Pandas eat leaves and bamboo sticks.
The Beijing Zoo was built in 1906 in Qing Dynasty with an area of only 10 hectares and a few humble pavilions to house the animals. It was named as "Wansheng Garden"( Ten-Thousand Animal Garden) and officially renamed as Beijing Zoo in 1955. Now it covers an area of 86 hectares, breeding over 5000 animals in more than 450 species. Beijing Zoo has rare Chinese animals, such as the Giant Panda, the Golden Monkey, the Red Panda, Sichuan golden monkey, Manchurian tigers, yaks from Tibet, enormous sea turtles and also a strong selection from around the world - Indian elephants, zebras and giraffes from Africa - the list of animals could be very long.
